Psiloritis Mountain: Hiking the Roof of Crete
The Psiloritis massif is the highest and most mythical mountain in Crete. Its highest peak (2,456m), "Timios Stavros" — meaning Holy Cross in Greek — offers a panoramic view of the entire island, given that you're standing at its highest elevation. Due to its historical significance, geological features, and environmental value, Psiloritis is part of UNESCO's Geoparks, placing the mountain among geoparks of global importance! Don’t forget that the origins of Greek mythology are said to be rooted in the mountain range of Mount Ida (Psiloritis).
Hiking Route to the Summit
The starting point for the most mythical hike in Crete is located on the northern slopes of Mount Psiloritis. From here, via a well-maintained trail, hikers ascend to the summit after three hours of challenging trekking. The breathtaking view from the peak serves as a landmark for all trails on the island. Additionally, Mount Psiloritis boasts another famous landmark near the summit: a small stone church built in the style of the Cretan "mitato," or traditional shepherd's mountain house/shelter. This structure exemplifies the harmonious relationship between the Cretans and their landscape.
